Essentials - Course Outline
Overview
Year 10 Mathematics Essentials students are prepared for entry to 2CD Mathematics or 2AB Mathematics in Year 11. They will perform mentally arithmetical operations. They will solve simple linear equations. They will sketch linear and quadratics functions. They will use formal methods to find x and y intercepts, gradient and linear rules. They will solve problems using Pythagoras' theorem and right-angled trigonometry. They will calculate square and cube roots. They will solve problems involving percentages. They will collect, represent, analyse and interpret data. They will find the perimeter, area, surface area and volume of shapes. They will solve problems involving ratio and determine best buys. They will find and interpret simple probabilities. They will factorise and solve simple quadratics. They will transform 2D shapes. They will solve simple financial problems.

Reporting
A brief interim report on class work and behaviour will be issued towards the end of Term 1. The achievement for the course will be reported as a College A - E grade in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. In addition, the student's approach to class work and behaviour will be reported via the usual key performance indicators.
Student Expectations
Students are expected to:
- bring the required text, calculator and stationery to each lesson
- complete regular homework from a variety of sources including the text, worksheets and MathsOnline
- be aware of assessment dates and have prepared thoroughly for each assessment
- be proactive in seeking help from the teacher when required
Practical - Course Outline
Overview
Year 10 Practical students are prepared for entry to 1BC Mathematics in Year 11. The students will broadened their understanding of mathematics at an elementary level by completing topics in the content strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Some students may be on individual education programs more suited to their ability.

Advanced A - Course Outline
Overview
Year 10 Mathematics Advanced A students are prepared for entry to both 3AB Mathematics and 3AB Mathematics Specialist in Year 11. They will manipulate and simplify surds. They will perform complex algebraic simplification and factorisation techniques. They will use both written and CAS methods to solve linear equations, simultaneous linear equations, linear inequalities and quadratic equations. They will solve problems involving direct, partial and inverse proportion. They will write formal proofs to show similarity or congruence in triangles. They will solve problems using non-right angled trigonometric formulae. They will graph and transform reciprocal functions. They will find total surface area and volume of complex compound solids. They will write in function notation. They will use spreadsheets to model financial situations such as interest and budgets. They will find and interpret measures of central tendency and spread.
